Was felling beech trees at roadside today, this was one one of the trees that were to be retained! When I looked at the job a month ago this fungus wasn't there, how fast do they grow?.IMG_20160908_105436.jpg.13b262e19b8d0fe3227ab1011b920897.jpg

Meripilus giganteus. Quick growers and quick to disintegrate. How was the crown looking? I suspect vehicles giving way and going over the root zone led to the fungus gaining entry to the butt.

The road was recently re surfaced and has beeno eaten by horses over the years, the crown is in serious decline ,how long till this becomes dangerous? (The client is about to build a house under it!)

Probably already is. Get a proper inspection done by whoever is responsible for them, or get someone in to do it, and get a plan of action down for the tree. If the crown is in evident decline, the Merip has usually sailed the beech right down to the mouth of the River Styx. The road resurfacing probably didn't help with this - would be curious to see if there are photos of the beech tree before and after. Trampling would also not help, of course.
