Beech Tree Disease Help?

Hi Guys,

 

This is the first time time I have posted a thread with pictures, so please accept my apologies now if i cock this up.

 

According to the client it hasn't come into leaf in the last four years and is covered by the marks showing in the pictures. I was just wondering if anyone new what the were. It runs from very nearly the base of the tree right to the top of the canopy.

What do you think the cause would be or is that impossible to tell?

If it hasn`t had leaves for four years it`s dead. That will make the bark peel off. It`s just part of the decay process.

cut it down and see what the wood is like, turners might want it!
