Oak weight

Good evening all, first post and hope you can help. We have a good deal of Oak (English) and Poplar which has been on the ground for almost exactly a year. A lot has been corded - (2.4m and 6m x 12"+) but has not yet been moved to pick up point at roadside.

For various unforeseen reasons we did not quite finish cutting the felled trees and are only now considering getting back in there to finsh off.

A few questions-

How many tons of 12 month old field dried cord could we get on 8 wheeler grab lorry.

Anyone interested 50 ish miles radius Emsworth (Hampshire W/Sussex border) to purchase several loads.

What's a fair price for an 8 wheeler load.

Anyone interested in pulling it out themselves and then working out a price for 8 wheeler loads delivered.

There's also some lengths of large butts 3/4+ ft diameter trunks there.

Any comments questions or otherwise very welcome.

Well where to start here,

What length is the load deck of the lorry, how many bays has it and how tall are the pins?

You say 6m long logs they must be very straight or it will be a nightmare to load.

A quick guide 1 bay 2.4m long 2.3mwide 2m high @ 55% if straight= 6 cubic metres If you can get 3 bays on that is 18 cubic metres

6m long 2.3m wide 2m high if straight @55%=15.18 cubic metres

1 year old oak probably a ton a metre

Load it up with poplar and probably be lucky to get 10 or12 tons

As for price depends on quality and your location.

If it is 12" plus could be difficult as everyone wants under 12" for there little processors.

Don t know if this helps but that s my 2 pennorth.

Hi Chris and seasons greetings to you along with thanks for your answer.

The grab lorry I mentioned is not a timber wagon so no pins but I would say !m high by 2m wide by 5/6m long.so that would be 10/12cube, less airspace plus whatever we load on top and strap down so back to 10/12 cu/m- would you concur with that or what would you suggest.

I'm now looking at cutting down the 6m lengths for ease of getting to main access - is there really such a difference in timber prices and firewood prices on 12" diameter cord?

From your post I think you are suggesting Oak = ton per cu/m Poplar = say 0.75 per cu/m

So we can load 12 ton of Oak cord and deliver or it can be picked up - what's a reasonable price per ton.

Thanks again for your help - Steve

Where your located there is a glut of timber. So price has got to reflect that, as it's been down 12 months so that has allowed it to loose the weight that makes oak a bad but in the first place so £40 £42 is a fair price.

If you can grade me an artic load I'll take the 12 to 16 inch stuff we have drivers looking for return loads from there all the time.

Hi little-green, that sounds interesting what sort of tonnage can you carry and can you take mixed lengths or do you want even lengths.

Lot of questions I know, but we've not had to clear this much before.

25 tonne need to have it at 2.5 m really to keep the stacks nice and even.

Again I'm looking for straight cord not tops 12 to 16 inch no pegs no unions.

Might seem fussy but if I pay the haulage I want it to be a breeze to process.

If you can supply that let me know.
