If the combination has been for a while and runs freely, then yes it's due to wear. Either to the bar's rails wearing evenly. Or the chain's drive links and you don't need them to be weakened. Or a bit of both. Either way it's got to be the same gauge for bar & chain.

 

If the chain is a smaller gauge than the bar, it'll be wobbling along the bar's rails. Leading to uneven wear and reduced cutting efficiency. If the chain's gauge is larger than that of the bar. It will rob power from the engine through excessive friction, unevenly & premaritally wear both bar & chain and you'll get through more oil.

 

Not the cheap answer. But best to get both a new chain and bar, before you use the saw again.
