Hi

I have noticed that the chain on my saw is marked 75 on it which is 1.6 but my 18"bar says 1.5 on it.the chain runs free enough on the bar but I am thinking this is just down to the bar being worn.

So is the combination of 1.6 chain & 1.5 bar ok.

If the combination has been for a while and runs freely, then yes it's due to wear. Either to the bar's rails wearing evenly. Or the chain's drive links and you don't need them to be weakened. Or a bit of both. Either way it's got to be the same gauge for bar & chain.

If the chain is a smaller gauge than the bar, it'll be wobbling along the bar's rails. Leading to uneven wear and reduced cutting efficiency. If the chain's gauge is larger than that of the bar. It will rob power from the engine through excessive friction, unevenly & premaritally wear both bar & chain and you'll get through more oil.

Not the cheap answer. But best to get both a new chain and bar, before you use the saw again.

When the 1.5mm bar slot is worn enough for 1.6mm chain to fit, it usually will be worn more at the top than down in the slot (sort of a"V" shape), making it likely that the chain leans over, specially in horisontal cuts.
