MS341 idle problem?

The fuel weeping could be from the cap or the tank breather which is on top the tank above the fuel cap (below the l/h/s of the air filter.

You should grease the bearing especially if dry. Some are actually a plastic caged bearing and once dry will either melt or break up.

Possibly the whirring noise is just the clutch making a minor contact with the drum or the drum outer just touching the brake band?

I know what I would do next BUT WITH CAUTION AND BE SENSIBLE WITH SAFETY IN MIND and that would be to remove the cover, bar and chain and fire it up and see whats happening in there whilst its open and you can view it all working. When you rev it up you will see the clutch expand and gripping the drum then release the drum as the revs drop to tickover. Then try the chainbreak which is obviously the outer band around the drum. You should be able to pick up where that whirring is coming from.

I had a chance to have a quick look at clutch bearing, drum etc yesterday evening. The bearing seemed ok but I ordered a replacement just in case. The inside of the clutch drum seemed to be coated with grease/oil and I figure this should be all cleaned before anything else. There is no obvious twine around the drum or clutch.

So my plan of attack will be strip it down and clean it all out and then reassemble with new greased bearing. I will then try running it carefully on the bench without the chain and bar to see if I can get to the bottom of the mysterious whirring noise when the brake is applied.

I have ordered a new tank cap as I swapped it out on to another saw and it is leaking there too.

Thanks again for all the help.

Its not unusual for the drum to be coated with oil. Give it a good clean but it will reoccur in time.

For the price of a bearing its certainly a good move to replace them before they get chance to fail.

When the drum is off have a quick check of the brake band, they tend to be pretty troublefree tho, and when you reinstall the drum check its not binding anywhere.

Hope that doesn't sound to patronising but it can be the simple things we all miss sometimes...
