i am studying a FORESTRY and Arb course so do get much time doing "tree surgery" (1day a week) but we have been able to do a lot of experimenting were we taught first with both ends of a line but moved on with in two weeks to lanyards and have done since the tutors are ALWAYS encouraged to use cambium savers where applicable (even tho most of the ropes are too thick to run through the large ring!!!)we are also allowed to use our own equipment if we wish as long as its lolered and so can use hitch climbers if we want to.

Best technique I have found is the hitch climber simplifies and makes our job easier. But within 3 months I was on srt. but that's personal

And I'm self taught learnt my knots offline. And I'm not a brain surgeon. But how complicated is a friction hitch and rope. Not really sorry to sound an arse!
