My old lecturer Duncan Slater at Myerscough was really into this and he had a little system to rip branches off stems to see the mechanical properties and the weight needed to do so!

Very interesting topic! See if you can find any work he has done.

I imagine it'll be impossible to get accurate results and I also think it would be foolish to try and work to the tested breaking strains. But I think it would make interesting reading but it shouldn't be used as a code of practice
