My understanding of most pathogens was that they are present in the environment all the time and that its a matter of the tree being in a weakened state that allows the infection to take hold.

 

That doesn't take into account pathogens that are transmitted by vecter.

i use water to get the sap etc off, then use a bycycle disc brake cleaner(neat alcohol) to dissinfect it.

I was taught on my rfs that there is potential for us to become a vector in the transport of disease, and was told what i'm doing is a good way to help prevent that. Obviously dragging yourself?harness?ropes over diseased tissue carries a risk of transporting disease, but dissinfecting ppe is obviously a bit more of a hassle.
