Make sure your teeth are set up correctly, not sure about your machine but mine has 9 pairs but only 3 pairs do any cutting, if the leading teeth are not set right it will be like a spoon. My 13hp JBM would do that pine stump in 20min with sharp teeth!

 

An NPTC instructor I spoke to recently said that to correctly set the teeth it was necessary to use a gauge/setting tool? Does that ring any bells..your reply

has confirmed that I definitely don't have them set correctly. I'm not quite sure where to go from here as the owners manual isn't really that explicit.

I take it you can be fairly vigorous with a smaller machine without causing any damage to it then, provided the teeth are set right?
