People power stops development in paradise

I lived worked in Costa Rica for a couple of years in the late 90s/early 00s, and spent most of my time based in Playa Dominical. Over recent weeks, the municipal had tried to "improve" the beech frontage by felling all the Palms and Indian Almond trees at the top of the beech so they could build a concrete boulevard

 

When the diggers rolled in last week they were met with strong opposition from the tree hugging locals who blocked the diggers access to the trees. A friend of mine has been fighting hard against the development, which at the moment has been halted. The Police who were moving the protesters on are now back helping to replant the trees that have been torn down. My mate has shown me these photos if your interested
