How do you set that up Pete..?

My oldest climbs on my set up [HC & VT] but that's only around smaller stuff, up to sort of 20 feet max. Beyond that I'd like to be able to get her down from the ground.

Other than using a second line attached to the base of the tree through a FS with a pulley on the end for her line which I can then lower on if need be, is there any other way?

You could put a pulley above the knot and attach your throw Line to the Beckett that way if you hold the tail of the rope pull on the throwline/ pulley that will break the knot and you can control the descent,

It's quite simple. I go up first using lanyard and climbing rope base tied or tied off at base of nearby tree, get to where I want to put the TIP. Once at TIP it's just a sling, krab and pulley to work as friction save. Base tied climbing rope goes through that and I come back down. Kid is then tied in to the end of climbing rope and I use a Petzl Reverso or Fig 8 on my harness to belay them as they climb. Putting pulley up means I can hoist them if necessary.

It's exactly same as the kids and I do on the climbing wall. I use a 45m rope so I've always got plenty to work with.

Hello. I have taken a fair few kids and adults rec. climbing over the past couple of years. I trained with TCI and became qualified to run sessions using the three knot system plus footloop plus safety knots. Safety knots are an inverted marlin spike that the climber adds in under their footloop as they ascend, every metre or so. Very small kids have difficulty with the hitch and a rads system with pulley set at tip is very easy for them. There is no descent fail safe here. If you are taking just a couple climbing then you will be able to manage that risk.

I agree with Pedroski, it is nicer for the kids to climb the tree. I have been using a hauling system these days. Setting a petzl traxion or mini traxion at the tip and letting climbers haul ass. Its so simple simple and gives them the sense to swing and grab and climb the tree. A climber has to be up top of course to release the cam and belay them back down.

Ah, got you..... The stuff my daughter has been climbing has nothing to 'climb', so she body thrusts up into the crown... I think she prefers the abseiling back down bit!

I bought my daughter a petzl full body harness, my worry with sit harness is kids like to hang upside down so give that extra security to know they won't slide out!

Depends on age and size of kids. My youngest is 10 now and uses a normal appropriately sized climbing harness. So long as it's tightened up around the waist as it should be, then he can't slide out of it even when hanging upside down.
