Dose any one know why Corylus avellana 'Contorta' grows the way it dose?

Only a guess, but it could be that the gene contolling growth (i.e. ensuring that it is even on both sides of a growing shoot) is faulty, so one side randomly grows faster than the other.

They're all clones though (as far as I know) which suggests that it's genetic. If it was an infection non corkscrew hazels would catch it and suddenly start twisting.

i think i have just worked it out

i was tolled wrongly that it was just a normal hazel that has been infected but have just look in my collins tree guide and seen its just a corkscrew hazel variants so you are right its genetic

i was tolled once it was some sort of infection because the new shots from the root base grow as normal

It could be a messed up phototropic response (also genetic) as new shoots grow upward as the result of a geotropic response; phototropism takes over only after the initial growth phase.
