Forest Inventory using GIS in Arboretum

Hi Everyone,

 

Been a while. I have been researching data collection and analysis methods for a large scale, 400+ acre inventory. I have never proposed such a large scale undertaking, and wondered if any firm has done the like. I am looking for some guidelines for writing the proposal, and how to asses and bill the clients for the work, including data collection, data management, and then, the pruning of said trees.

 

Our company was called out to do some after storm maintanence, and it was proposed that we conduct an inventory while inspecting the trees for care, killing two birds with one stone. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!!

I have used all the current gis mapping systems that are available, both on a research and working projects.

 

1) Many are way over priced

2) Many have been designed by people with little or no experience of trees

3) Many are not compatable with industry standard import/display software

4) Many are inconsistent with GPS hardware

5) If you have problems some suppliers offer terrible support

 

 

Beware, as you will get alot of spiel, at the end of the day these are sales people selling these programs with a biased view.

 

 

I will however recommend the pocket Gis software that you can adapt yourself to any particular job.

 

We have quite substantial GIS experince and can adapt and use mapinfo and arcpad, its a shame its a bit to advanced for general users.
