Tirfor winch

Saw this on ebay (eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace) so bid on it and won it. On closer inspection of the winch in the picture it seems it's part of this system (TRACTEL® | TIRSAFE™) and here's the user manual for it (http://www.tractel.com/files/126106343923976.pdf).

Just wondering if it could be used for pulling stumps and directing falls etc or if it's a non starter with this device? Any thoughts

Cheers

Looks like a slightly newer version of the type.... If the cable is too thin you won't do anything with it yet. But assuming you get it set up with the right cable then you could certainly try pulling stumps with it, that's what mine used to be used for by the previous owner....

I'd be slightly suspicious here.

When you get it, measure the cable and check that it has a formed tapered end on it to see whether it's the right one. I suspect it will be - after all, who gets a cable for a Tirfor and then gives up on it? If it is the right one, check whether there is general wear on the outer wires - no longer round.

I suspect that when you open up the case you'll find either wear on the jaws or some cracked rivets in the jaw blocks are the problem.

Either way, the parts are easily available, it will pull about 3 tons (although it has been severely down rated so they no longer do this officially and you would need one of the old sheer pins) and at that price it's still a good buy.

TRactel make fall arrest systems, this looks like its for setting up your own when none is present, I would give them a call as its possibly been down rated as the factor of safety is 5.1 were people lifting is concerned so it no doubt rated higher than stated fo pulling etc

Winch arrived. Looks ok, cable feeds through and doesn't seem to slip but I've not had it under serious tension so not too sure. I'm going to go into a local dealer next week and probably get a new wire rope for it so I know I can trust the wire and hand bar.
