this kind of burring on planes low down on the stem is i suspect much like in the oak, caused by buckling initialy. While planes have buckles normaly sometimes they burr and swell like this, the most extreme case lives in barnet and is called the boab plane for good reason!

I suspect there is a fungal agent involved, though given the fact our planes histories only go back 300 years in britain it is hard to determine the natural progress of the tree specific eco system of planes and any associated body languages. the cycle of the plane tree is over 1000years and I would have to make a trip overseas for some months to give you a quality answer to the question.

 

i hope one day to travel to see the plane in its native habitat and in its ancient state:thumbup1:
