I've just had a look through a load of our pallets and most do have the HT stamp on them. I guess I'll be more choosy in future.

Only burn pallets that are marked HT (Heat Treated).

 

Good info I never knew that. I read somewhere you need to exceed 650 deg c to burn of treated wood.

The IPPC has certain requirements for marking of pallets.

 

Just pulled this from a search :

 

'Heat treatment (HT) to a minimum core temperature of 56oC for a minimum of 30 minutes. To attest to compliance to the standard the pallet must be clearly marked on 2 faces showing the official IPPC logo, a 2 letter country code (xx), a unique number (000) assigned by the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO), HT for Heat Treatment.'

 

I have a block from a pallet in my hand and it is marked HT/KC/DB

DB means de-barked

not sure what kc stands for but some say KD meaning kiln dried

I am missing something here.... why only burn pallets marked HT?

 

I understood it to mean that the pallet (on its first run) was free from creepy crawlies and suitable to go through the more diligent country's customs. What does it signify when burning it?

That it's been heat treated to kill off any nasties, rather than fumigated with a toxic chemical agent such as methyl bromide - that will leave residues in the wood.
