Cheers Everyone. Im gonna order the MAUL that Steve Bullman suggested and aim to get chopping straight away, although it will prob take me several weeks, haha.

 

What does Matty mean when he says work the Rings from the outside ?

I cant quote him,but try working round the circumference,with the maul following it,as against trying to split the whole ring along its radius.bit like trying to make a twenty pence piece out of a ten pence!

This often makes the splitting of large or tough rings easier.

If you split around the edges it will open the grain of the wood up easier, if you take a mighty swipe into the centre of the log there is greater risk of the axe/maul getting stuck, so on larger rings is is easeir to work around the outside.
