I cant quote him,but try working round the circumference,with the maul following it,as against trying to split the whole ring along its radius.bit like trying to make a twenty pence piece out of a ten pence!

This often makes the splitting of large or tough rings easier.:001_smile:

If you split around the edges it will open the grain of the wood up easier, if you take a mighty swipe into the centre of the log there is greater risk of the axe/maul getting stuck, so on larger rings is is easeir to work around the outside.
