Oak advice please

Don't need to see a FB to see it's effects. L. Sulphureus is a heart wood brown rotter. Plenty of brown rotted heart wood there!

 

butit is the mycelial felts that seperate the brown rot of laeti from that of Fistulina hepatica on oaks, however, there is of course the daedalea quercina, piptoporus quercina both brown rots in oak predominantly, but in this case unlikely.

But it could be something other than L. sulphureus causing brown rot?

 

Surely that way of identifying the cause of decay isn't very reliable?

 

There are many different fungi that cause brown rot?

 

I know Hamadryad has a proper explanation for his ident... I just don't understand how you can be 100% sure of the fungus that caused the rot, just by seeing some rot that could be caused by a number of brown rotters? In this case anyway, as you can't see any fruiting bodies..?
