Hazel coppice value?

Good Evening,

 

I have very small area of hazel coppice approx 40 stools in Essex, each with between 10 and 25 good poles they were last cut 9 years ago, I have had a message left by a chap I roughly know that he would like to buy the stands this winter. Now i have no idea what they would be worth as before we simply gave the wood to a mate thatcher as he had done us a favour patching up a small wind blown bit of thatch.

i recently went to the southeast coppice meeting and a lot hazel cutters and hurdle makers where there i did not hear about price but good quality hazel is in demand 7 year old stems seems to be the magic number you could try calling Alan Walters at Wildwood Charcoal & Coppice on 01243 778106 for advise. I'd heard a figure of around £300 for a reasonably well stocked acre of that age hazel. You'd be looking at perhaps 400-500 stools per acre for that sort of money.

 

For the stuff I cut, it works out to around 4p per rod most years.

9 yr old hazel has probably got too big for a lot of uses, our hazel is cut at approx 7 yr rotation, we would be selling an acre for in the region of £100- £200 depending on quality and density, to be honest i would ask for little money for it and just accept the fact that whoever does the cutting is really doing you a favour by potentially improving the quality of it, providing it is cut properly. the long term health of the stools is the important thing.

Thanks guys for the response, I'm probably not going to ask him for anything, will just see what he offers as it's him who's appoached me for it, I have no use for the stuff so hopefully he can make some use of it, but wanted an idea of value for my own peace of mind.
