We use an on demand system, by which when the pressure drops ie you turn on the tap the pump starts up and supplies water.

I would guess a 100 meter+ plus run. the pump has a thermal cut out should the feed pipe breck or other issue occur. This is our only suppy of water and it seems to work ok.

Most important is head height that the pump will pump up to. Some centrifugal pumps only have a very small head height of less than 10 meters. The other thing is do you want it priming or self priming (just means will the pump start automatically or do you need to bleed the air out of the circuit first). In your situation I would go for a submersible pump as this is self priming but with a floating limit switch so that when the well is empty it automatically cuts out. I have used a lot of pumps for irrigation on the nursery and found Draper pumps to be cheap and reliable. If your away from mains electric than 12v shurflow pumps are excellent.
