As well as all the above considerations it is worth considering rooting depth of species, if you have a lawn close by, i bet you find Cherry roots a pain in the lawn!

 

if close to the house and if your on Shrinkable clay would be wise to avoid thirsty trees too.

 

The Foxglove tree already mentioned is a fine recomendation, and does not mind being pruned, its major feature however is those delightfull purple flowers which few trees can rival. It will fill the space fairly quickly, but is easily managed with Bypass pruners on an annual basis as a small pollard.

 

No fruit on this, nor nuts though.

Build a frame (pergola) and grow some wisteria and grapes. That way you get fruit and flowers:001_smile:

 

or go for a japanese maple like Acer palmatum -Senkaki or similar.
