Before panicking and thinking its gonna cost the earth, check the tank breather is clear, and check that the fuel filter is clean, does the fuel pipe have a split? Re-check all the simple, cheap options. did it run ok prior to the strip down, is the carb diaphragm in the right way up? (I had a saw from the factory with the diaphragm in upside down!!)

Helo this is my first post. Had to reply to this one as I had the same problem a few years ago with a stihl. It was the plug, when you held it upright with the sparking part at the top it looked fine. In position in the saw the electrode was falling out of its seat and shorting the gap. Replaced the plug all fine until it did it again after about 20 hours. Dodgy batch I think.

Hi,

Thanks for all the help and I think it’s paid off as the good news is that I’ve got it going again.

Bad news is that I’m not entirely sure where the fault was. Firstly I flipped over the diaphragm gasket as it looked as if it wasn’t completely sealing around the edge and at the same time I reduced the spark plug gap. I tend to think that the problem lay with the spark plug, initially when cold it conked out quite quickly once warmed it conked out a lot sooner, I seem to recall from somewhere that the insulation within a plug can eventually breakdown as the plug gets older and hotter.

Looks like a new plug is the answer.

Many thanks again

George.
