Why use a shredder instead of a chipper? Often wondered if they would be any good, no need to worry about stones and metal. Pros and cons please, sorry for jacking the thread!

We have both a Shliesling chipper and a Saelen Shredder. We find the chipper best for cleaner bigger stuff and the shredder good for brash, hedge cuttings, soft prunings. They'll both take both to a degree but that's what we've found them best for from our experience.

The Saelen is slightly different in that it has flails and chipper blades so stones could cause problems. A pure hammer mill type machine may take a bit more abuse but not many of them like stone/metal in general
