I've been looking at Digital Camcorders and find the choice a little confusing.

They vary in price dramatically

Does anyone have one that they can recommend.

I need optical zoom, good quality optics, good picture quality on moving objects and HD capable recording.

Hard Drive is the way forward. DL straight to PC or burn straight to DVD. I use a JVC Everio 34x optical zoom 40 gigabyte hard drive. cost about 350ish ( wifes christmas prezzie) I used it for my tree vids.

Do they need to be High def

I'm of the opinion that camcorders are like computors, they are out of date within 12months. I didn't want to spend hundreds on one to find it's bottom of the pile and needs updating.

How do you find your picture quality Log

It depends how you treat the raw footage. I use the camera on fine definition there are 4 levels L, N, F, UF. The raw files are produced into a vid. The quality of the vid is dependent on the final use HQ DVD is better than streaming .mpeg for uploading to a website. I can't really say much more as I am new to this myself.

I went middle of the road and can upgrade later if it works out ok. Cheap is always cheap, but expensive gives lots of features that my be a waste of time
