Jodrell Laboratory, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London

Thursday 20th May 2010

‘The right tree, in the right place’ is perhaps one of the most commonly uttered phrases in modern arboriculture. But what is the right tree? Where is the right place? And how do we determine or judge the ‘rightness’ of either?

This popular workshop aimed specifically at the tree care professional will take place on 20th May 2010, at the Jodrell Laboratory at Kew Gardens. It will investigate aspects of contemporary and historical tree design in the environment of one of the world’s most prized botanic gardens.

Topics to be covered will include

  • An examination of some of the basic principles of designing with trees
  • An understanding of what could be considered as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ design
  • An historic overview of the incorporation of trees into our designed landscapes.

The day will include practical exercises which will inform the principles being discussed. It will provide a rare insight into this important area of arboricultural activity – and it may change the way you look at trees in the designed landscape forever.

This workshop will help you

  • Break the mould of using trees chosen from a core list of individual specimens learnt off by heart atcollege or favourites selected from a tick list table of horticultural attributes
  • Make use of the aesthetic power of trees to create bold organic compositions
  • Understand the principles of design and historical development
  • Preserve historic treescapes by avoiding ill-considered planting or management schemes.

Who should attend? Anyone who

  • Plants trees
  • Designs tree planting schemes
  • Agrees the removal and replacement of preserved trees
  • Considers tree planting proposals
  • Comments on landscaping elements within planning applications
  • Manages open spaces, historic or otherwise.

The workshop will be presented by:

Peter Thurman - a landscape designer, arboriculturist and chartered forester with 25 years experience working throughout the UK and in Japan, Germany, Dubai, Finland and Italy.

Clive Mayhew - is an arboricultural consultant with over 20 years experience of the industry. He is particularly interested in tree planting techniques, and has extensive experience in the restoration of historic treescapes.

Due to the practical elements within the workshop, no more than 30 delegates can be accommodated on each day. The Arboricultural Association is grateful to Barcham Trees for sponsoring this event.

The course cost is £180.00 + VAT for AA members and £200.00 + VAT for non-members. Please
