I think I'm jumping to a conclusion with Phytophtora sp.

 

The largest image has that reddish growth in the top right corner which is steering me away from Phyt.

Yeah - however it's throughout the full extent of the main stem and on a species not readily associated with wet wood so I'm a little cautious dismissing it as such - i'm thinking it's more likely a symptom of something else
