Could you not have used one of these, or am I getting confused with which 'ends' you require. This is from the HT131 and is a seperate component on the end of the inner drive tube and is the square drive that connect to the head.

Driver Genuine Stihl Part OEM Part No. 4182 740 3501 Suitable for the following Stihl Machines: HT 100, HT 101, HT 130, HT...

It's a simple press fit in the end of the inner alloy tube

That's an awesome idea. Could drill out the fluted end to precisely match the diameter of the splined trimmer shaft, then tap threads in the hole and glue the thing on.

I made it work, anyway, for the time being at least.

Shaved flakes off a blue barrel and packed the socket with them, melted with a heat gun and just stuck it on the splined shaft. Eyeball tolerance, so yeah, it's not perfectly centered, but I can't feel any more vibration than usual.

Had to sleeve the trimmer outer shaft with some aluminum flashing, as it was a bit loose in the Stihl head.

It works, cuts. Power is lacking, as the trimmer is only 24cc, but the Stihl head chain sprocket is very badly worn and is actually creating resistance. I've a couple new spur sprockets ordered, and new chains, so hopefully that will sort it. We'll see how long the blue barrel plastic holds up. The good thing is, it fits snugly and easily fits on my and off, so it's an easy swap.
