Bit of time on my hands so I thought I would take a look at my old 55, running really lumpy cutting out, sounds like a bag of nails, and loss of power, no scoring on the pot and piston, but lots of carbon and blackening, could this be possible cause? Any thoughts would be well appreciated ?

Could be a few different things. Pot and piston may not be scored, but remember you can lose compression at the bottom end as well, sounding like a bag of nails could be worn bearings and leaky seals. Best off pressure vacuum testing before taking the pot off. We can all guess, but it's testing that gets the answer right....usually.

That carbon isn't the issue for your poor running, it can be cleaned off by lightly rubbing with scotch-bright but isn't a concern. A compression check is worth doing and if it is 150-170, the pot and piston are probably OK.

Clutches can make a saw sound pretty ropey at low revs.

The saw top looks pretty clean so it is probably in good condition but worth checking the crank bearings. Set the carb back to one turn out on both screws and see if it livens it up.
