We have a really old Hawthorn Tree that I already cut back a bit last winter. Now it's in full leaf I can see I should have taken quite a lot more off it.

 

Would it be ok to cut it back now or should I wait until winter? I don't want to kill it. I'm talking about taking quite a few established branches off with a saw rather than trimming it with a hedge cutter.

Here's one I did: 14" dia, most of top taken out and a mere sliver of wood to keep it alive. You won't kill it.
