Been having some interesting discussions about it and Husky Power 2 pre mix. Have been buying 25L cans of power 2 and power 4 but we are wondering if that is why the piston in the 440 has grenaded. Theory being the fuel burns slightly hotter and thus when the 440 was used for a abnormally long period a couple weeks back it got hot enough to expose the manufacturing flaws in the aftermarket piston. Tbh I'll keep running it in the other stuff but the Dolmar is going to get E5 with a 40-1 mix of stihl HP, too nicer toy to risk. I'm trying to convince/lure him back onto the tinterwebs 🤣 I will pass on everyone's regards.

Trouble is I'm not a woodsman and unfortunately petrol tools seemingly don't like being put in storage with modern fuel, so best avoided as much as I can. I tend to use the 440 once a month normally either to cut sleepers, knock off the odd branch to get the digger in or do a bit of demolition of boardwalks etc. (yes, not the right tool, yada yada it works). Currently I've got the "shit" 038 farm boss as a spare, and the 440 (undergoing heart surgery)

He's not here. And Dodgy timber cutter roll's off the tounge better 🤣

As promised and on the basis that I was told twice earlier in the week that "there are a few people that would appreciate seeing photos of that" here's some photos of the 166. I was offered it randomly as my 440 Stihl I abuse has suffered from the piston identifying as a grenade and is "dead" upon moaning about it a mate proclaimed "I've a big saw here I keep meaning to get shot of"..... It was secreted in a corner and rather dusty. We threw some petrol in it and it started 5-6th pull. I'm not sure why, but it felt right and although I'm not a fan of multiple saws I decided I'd have it.... Although I wasn't keen on paying much for a obsolete saw (I knew it would be a abuse and forget saw with non existent parts). I'm not going to say a price, but it was quite a bit under £500. Yes, I know I'm very very lucky. I then rang DTC (Dartmoor Timber Cutter).... "I just want to know how badly I've wasted my money on this 166 Dolmar?" To be told F*** off along with do you mean a 116 and "send a photo". Total honesty occured and I'm greatful to a cracking friend for the advice. Many would of told me it was obsolete and then tried to buy it for a small amount more. So I now had a choice.... Clearly it needs to either be kept for best or sold.... Cashing out is tempting BUT I'm not a lover of people with massive collections who's goal is to buy literally everything and hide it away 😳 and alas that is who's going to pay top dollar for the saw.... Having had a very nice rare tractor in the family that was sold to a "collector" who sold up 2 years later and was unbelievably arrogant when I made contact to ask for a price prior to the auction on it I severely dislike the private collection types. So I'm keeping it (DTC has first refusal if I ever sell) It's going to sit in my living room at home and occasionally will come out and do the odd job. I do intend to take it occasionally to vintage rallies I intend to frequent with classic plant (think cromford, Torquay etc). Onto the saw it's a beast. If anyone has a chain brake/cover kicking around I'm after one as this one has obviously had a brake drum retention issue in the past. Also attached are some photos of a Johnston that I've given to DTC as a thankyou. It was ultimately destined for the skip but Its been on a shelf for a decade because it looked too nice to throw away. Hopefully he can get it going. Hope this thread is of interest and if anyone wants photos of anything in particular let me know.

That's the one 🤣

The dog runs on Chicken and beef from the pub. It's a very very spoilt dog.

I will have you know that 440 is second only to my dog, she will be rebuilt at great expense and then immediately consigned to cutting railway sleepers and wood with bits of nail in again 🤣

Thankyou Stubby. As a few have clicked (early on) I'm on the wind up egged on by a couple collaborators who will be annoyed I'm not keeping this going but I can't keep leading people on. 🤣 I brought the 166 by complete accident earlier in the week following the fairly major death of a Stihl 440 and me wondering around a bit mopey about it. (It's getting rebuilt at a stupid cost because its a bloody fantastic saw for the hideous work I do). I almost didn't buy the dolmar. Namely because whilst I do like classic plant the reality is old petrol tools for work are bad news in general and when they go pop you have to throw them away..... I very nearly didn't buy the dolmar over £50 (genuinely I'm a idiot) but something drew me to it and it felt like a really soulful bit of kit. Having foolishly purchased it I rang a former member of here that has a thing for oils (Dartmoor logger from memory) who despite being in the prime position to give me £500 and take the saw (yes, yes I'm that naive) he didn't and has even had a quick look at it for me and got it tuned a treat. I'm going to keep the 166 and take her to the odd show we occasionally frequent, I'll post a thread up sometime over the weekend with some better photos and the reasoning why I'm keeping it rather than cashing in on it. Might be a good thread, might be dull as. Your welcome to tell me your not interested and I can fk off, you know the drill. Meanwhile (because good people should always get good karma) I'm giving my friend a old Johnston I had in the shed in the hopes he can get it running. I may of rekindled his love for chainsaws with the visit of the 166 🤣 I hope the pantomime has provided some enjoyment. I'm off now to be moaned at by the others who have been trying to convince me to keep it going indefinitely.

I've actually already got one of those complete with blade that I intend to use for a garden table 🤣
-
Does it smell a bit fishy?
-
A pair of stout boots and a motorcycle helmet was recommended earlier? What would you suggest?
-
Do they do a petrol recip saw? Or would I need to purchase a generator. And does anyone have any thoughts on the deal for that "farm boss"
-
Do you think that Stihl would do a better job then?

Reference the pallets, I like to cut the long flat pieces off the blocks of wood so I can save the lengths as it's good useful timber. I have tried a pry bar in the past but it tends to split the wood. Don't have a sawsall unfortunately but I'm trying to do it away from the electricity (hence no black and decker) Few more questions (although we haven't answered many of the original ones yet?) Firstly the blade brake seems to come back slightly too far? Is this normal for these saws, I've had a look underneath where I think the brake is and the cog that turns the chain seems to have some play left and right? Could this be part of the problem. Secondly I've been kindly offered this 038 "Farm Boss" which is apparently a much better saw for what I want and is built to last with the parts still easily available. he's happy to swap for £100+ postage? Does that sound right?

Hi all. I've just spent some time cleaning the saw up, my neighbour has very helpfully given it a bit of a tune as he is very well versed in petrol engines and has shown me a BU-KO 65cc saw he brought off Amazon. I must be honest and say that what attracted me to the older saw was it seemed alot better built than even the Stihl and Husquvana saws I had a brief look at. Am I correct in thinking these numbers on the blade would be helpful in ordering a smaller bar? Is it even possible? My neighbour says you can stick a aftermarket bar (he suggests Oregon) on a saw but I notice this bar is the same as the chainsaw? I've some pallets I want to cut up later on but my neighbour said to be careful of nails? I know my old black and decker would go blunt when cutting the flats off the pallet blocks and obviously don't want to do the same to this saw? I must admit I'm very surprised it's generated so much Interest. I nearly didn't buy it as it looked old and obsolete but something drew me to it. Thanks all, sorry for the stupid questions.
