  1. Thankyou ☺️ The neck is off a Hohner LX90. The pickups might be too but in honesty I don't know - I bought a guitar to use for parts, but dismantling it revealed that the body was MDF under the shiny black finish, so goodness knows where the rest of it came from!
  2. Saw the guy who gave me the wood and asked him - it is indeed cherry. In the end I changed direction because I couldn't trust that the wood was dry enough to use as a whole slab. I cut it into thin strips that I could dry in an open oven in a sensible timeframe and used it as the light-coloured bands in the guitar body below. Really pleased with how it turns out; it makes me look a much better woodworker than I actually am!
  3. Cut and planed and photographed in unfortunately not great light this morning: Hand included for scale. No needles on it and not resinous. Wishing I'd sealed the ends when I got it as it's showing a lot of checking, but I was given it as firewood. Hindsight's a wonderful thing. Thankyou all for your thoughts and insight!
  4. I can't find any pictures of spruce logs with the horizontal bands in the bark, but would happily be corrected as I can't claim expertise here! I think the picture might be misleading; I took some sandpaper to the end face and there is a change in the wood about 50mm or so inwards from the bark. The growth rings in the outer part are closer together and the wood is darker. I just found this:Alamy stock photo of cherry wood and it does look very similar, apart from the change in thickness of the growth rings.
  5. Hi, sorry to turn up just to ask for help, but has anyone any idea what this wood is? It's about 30cm diameter, pale wood. Growth rings are fairly wide set and I can mark the wood with a fingernail but it's not really soft. Thankyou in advance for any thoughts!
  6. Give us a ring beforehand!
