  1. Hello. I bought this mask when doing small pieces of wood work indoors. I know should be outside but I felt if i got a good enough mask i be protected but i find this is not keeping out the sawdust. I can still breath some of it in and some of it is even collecting inside the mask itself!! Any recommendations. 2. Hello, I am working on making jewellery out of wood. I bought pure tung oil as there are no chemicals but found it to be quite oily to touch and so not ideal when treating wooden jewellery. Any recommendations would be most appreciated
  3. My spoons if you call them that are terrible. I hate to admit it but i have realised that I do not have the strength to do hard carving as my old wrist injury as come back. I am going to cheat and purchase a dremrl or foredom instead. What would be the beat treatment fr wood if i were to make jewellery? Tung oil, water proof varnish?
  4. Hello, I hope everyone had a good Xmas and New Year, I have bought some carving tools and made some pieces but they are not great. Will keep on trying
  5. Thank you everyone with your input πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€
  6. At trigger-andy - of course i will be planning to get permission first from the foresty. I am in the beginning process hence my earlier post where i stated my plan to work indoors. Yes I have made a feeble attempt in carving a spoon but that was out of a small block of balsa wood that came with my newly bought carving tools. I am just dipping my toe in the water but i am aware of the rules of the law.
  7. Hello, I am amazed by the replies I have recieved under this topic. Thank you everyone for your input. :) I have started carving a wooden spoon and well lets say it did not go as planned. I will not be showing it on here as...........well it looks like I have done nothing!! I found it very hard to carve by hand. I have been for a while looking at rotary kits. Also ways in which to do this indoors which is very difficult considering the mess it will make. I was aware of the artist Gillian Genser who had made a incubator like box ie acrylic sheets glued together with holes in them. Two holes where one can place their hands inside. A small generator power fan used to suck the dust out and through into a pipe that feeds outside. Her story is very sad but very interesting on the reason behind why she built this see - https://www.facebook.com/bbcnews/videos/i-was-poisoned-by-my-art/2248370372150710/ I have no idea on where to buy something like this. I think i will need to look to ways in getting it made.
  8. Hi Goobypunk, thank you. Yes will be sure to use some Googles if and when I get to the stage of using electric appliances. Just starting off with hard carving for now. I intend to do make some pedants for necklaces and bracklets. Perhaps a spoon? See how I go. If I have any succes will be sure to post the images. Thank you for the cool offer about the box off timber. Will make a note of that in the near future. πŸ™‚
  9. Hellllllllllllloooooooooooooooo everyone. WOW thank you so much for the quick responses. Much appreciated from Woodworks; agg221; roys; gary112. I live Scotland near a forest so I do have plenty trees to choose from. Just need to know the type of trees LOL. Special thanks to @roys for your offer - that is so sweet of you. I think I maybe a bit too far from ya? I have taken down all your advice in my notes. Will let you know how I get on with my new interest.
  10. Hello, As the title suggests I am a beginner at this. I intend to start making wooden jewellery and would appreciate any help and advice on the best types of wood to use. I have hand wooden craft tools and intend to do this all by hand. Thank you πŸ™‚
