Well, that's brilliant. Thanks to all you who replied. It's a great relief that its a Lawson's Cypress, as that is also known as a Port Orford Cedar - and my wife today got confirmation that the house can be called 'Cedars'. We'd have looked more than a bit silly had it been something else ?

Having looked at examples of mature trees via Google I think I agree. There's not much evidence that it has been topped though, looking up through the branches. Mind you, I may not know what I'm looking at ?

Ah, I don't know the answer to that as we've only just inherited it. Is there an easy way to tell, other than climbing up it to look?

Thanks Steve. All the pictures I've seen of that tree show it with a pointy top and long spindly branches that stick out sideways. This seems a much rounder and neater shape. Would that be because it is more mature?

I might add, all the logs and rubbish from beneath it have now been removed ?
