Looks like a good way of getting it flat. Just wondering, is it hard to get a parallel top and bottom surface or do you just use the sled on one side?

Its a fair point! A router sled would be a much easier way of doing it but i dont have an appropriate flattening bit... i will be buying one if i do another slab project though!!

i always think sycamore is a very clean looking wood, good to see something creative getting done with it, as it makes a great log burner wood.

That is right, I think at that point I was down on the 80 grit and wanting to identify any low spots I still needed to tackle with the plane.

I have also used it with good effect when going up the grits, if you keep an even pressure when your marking it it helps ensure you are taking off a similar amount across the whole piece.

Hi guys,

I am new to this forum but thought I would post up a couple of photos of my first slab project - a two person desk for the study.

Desk is made out of a well seasoned piece of sycamore that I planed flat with a Record No8 plane ( a bit of a beast to use!), filled the surface inperfections with a small amount of clear resin and then finished it with an orbital sander and two coats of Fiddes Hard Wax Oil.

I would welcome any feedback or comments.
