A colleague recently shared this paper with me (see below). I found it made for an excellent read, lucid and informative in equal measures.
The author is Christopher J. Luley, PhD who is a tree pathologist and vice president at Urban Forestry LLC.
The main points covered are:
The circumstances in which callus and woundwood are formed.
The environmental and physical conditions that affect growth of callus and woundwood.
The implications of callus or woundwood on tree risk assessment.

Witches broom on pine

If you’ve visited Hatfield Forest, Essex, you may have also have spotted this whopping-big witches broom hanging high in the crown of a black pine.
Anybody know the causal agent?
