  1. I hope so, the career i have followed has done me some favours and i'm forever grateful for the opportunities i've had but it's never really captivated me. I really think becoming and Arborist will quench the thirst for getting stuck into manual labour again, learning new things and having a variety of working conditions and challenges, along with being genuinely interesting. I can imagine like most jobs, one aspect may become tedious or boring but with the bad comes the good like you say with the climbing aspect of things. I really can't imagine at this moment how brilliant it must be having to clamber up and organise every cut, every drop! Thanks Brendan PM sent!
  2. Cheers, yeah I'm under no illusion that some days really will suck, luckily after being on building sites the ice cold sideways rain won't be too much of a shock. So if I got those tickets and did a few Saturdays every now and then it should be a pretty good indicator of the work load and industry. Thing is in my head, even if I get the tickets and don't go fully into it as a career just yet at least it's more on the CV and knowledge for me.
  3. Ah right yeah I suppose it would make more sense, I think my only issue is I'm trying to keep my current job while I train or look into this trade so I can fund it and still pay my bills. I think I'm going to keep trying to get the odd day experience when possible and build it all up slowly.
  4. Not a bad plan at all, is it best to go on these set weekly courses or better to enrol in a college over a longer term? I fully understand where you're coming from Matt, to be fair have already taken the massive pay decrease when I moved off site into our works office 4 years ago for family issues, I'm always going to keep my sparky tickets upto date but I do fancy a change. I just haven't found it to be that captivating but I guess all jobs get tedious and boring. I just want to escape the office environment now and all the politics that comes with it. It is a good trade to be fair and the money is there, I just found the health and safety side of it has gone far beyond common sense, I'm all for keeping yourself safe and all that and realise this trade may be similar but some of the rules and regs electrically are getting out of hand. When did you leave the trade?
  5. Ah that's a shame, you never know in the future I may be down there one day. Yeah that's a good shout, I've messaged a few local firms this week asking for the above but not had any response, I can fully understand though as having someone inexperienced isn't really what people need. I'm based out in Newark but I travel into hucknall for work currently and out towards West Bridgford way for family. Thanks I shall do! Cheers for the advice so far all.
  6. Nottingham, East Midlands mate.
  7. Hi all, New to the forum, i've asked a similar question elsewhere but thought this area might be better suited as i've had no joy with responses. I'm thinking about a change in career after 9 years, i'm 24 and currently a qualified electrician / draughtsman. From the little reading i've done if i'm serious about getting into this industry I need to complete at the following courses at a minimum. CS30, CS31, CS38 & CS39. Would it be more beneficial to try and find an apprenticeship scheme? However having done a 4 year one already i know its more a young persons incentive. Or would i be better to enroll myself on these courses, get the basic kit needed and PPE and try to gain experience with local firms? I've messaged a few asking for the possibility or work experience in the future but had no response, i can understand someone with no experience is not ideal at all. Just after some advice really, or am I being naive about this industry thinking you can just jump into it? I'd keen to get as much knowledge and experience / qualifications out of this as i can as it interests me. Thanks for any help / advice. Tom
  8. Hi all, My names Tom, i'm 24 and currently a qualified electrician and electrical / mechanical draughtsman. I've fallen out of love with my current profession and would really like to get into this industry. I've no fear of getting my hands dirty, working at height or following health and safety I'm just unsure where to start? I'd ideally like to gain as many qualifications as possible but where should i begin? Thanks for any help!
