  1. get yourself the correct training its a legal requirement if you are working on somebody else s property I lost a good friend to a wind blown conifer not a good place to start. there are some good vids on you tube there are also some really bad ones as a complete novice you have no way of working out whats good and bad. go for the training its well worth the money

  2. Hi I was wondering what is best chainsaw sharpener out there?

I have my 14"-18" bars for my stihl saw and firewood processor with Oregon bar. Need to sharpen on a daily basis.

To date have been filing manually, which is quite time consuming. I recently bought a PROFESSIONAL ELECTRIC CHAINSAW SHARPENER AUTO ADVANCE from ebay which is a load of rubbish, really cheap and nasty and does not do a good job.

I was wondering if anyone with more experience has any good suggestions?

Also what is best file gauge? I have a Stihl gauge but was wondering if there are any better ones?

Finally seen these Powersharp accessories. Does anyone rate these and does they also file down leaders as well as cutters, or does leader have to be filed manually?

I always sharpen by hand check out the husky guides they're pretty cool. I also have an oregon sure sharp but the only time I use it is if I hit some thing in the tree I find for every day use it eats chains for breakfast they dont last long at all and i can get them much sharper by hand plus you are spending longer looking at the chain you are more likely to spot any damage which could be potentially dangerous

  3. Anyone else suffer with this? Been getting it worse and worse the past few years. Don't have running nose etc etc, but what i do get is very short of breath. Particularly bad this year, not sure if its the rape thats about or just everything. Wondering if theres anything over the counter people take for this sort of thing? yes I know I should see a doctor, but too busy!!

chances are you are reacting to oak pollen not good for a tree worker. Try benadryl 1 a day works for me without any nasty side affects like most of the stuff i have tried. good luck bud

  4. What do you pay to rent your yard? Being offered around 3/4 of an acre hard standing small shed super private water & electric for £100 a week.

Seems reasonable but I could be wrong

sounds good mate keep things up together if i were you particularly the sawdust and bark me and my mates have lost so many rented yards over the years because of this. I run things from a retired farmers place now its ideal my bits the tidy area

  5. Hey guys,

Starting out in arb, still in two minds on whether to try and get on the books or jump straight into self-employed and accept the facts that as a sub-contractor with all the tickets but very little experience, the wage won't be great!

If I go down the self employed route I will be looking for my own work in between subbing to firms.

I'm just toying with some ideas of a setup, in regards to chippers. How many guys here use a small chipper, less than 6"? I've seen some of the 4" vertical feed chippers, that don't have to be towed. Ideally something that I could put on the back of my pick up, and tow a trailer behind. Chip into trailer and crosscut everything over 4/5" and stack on top of chip (for firewood/carving/charcoal). Of course this method is a lot more work than sending whole trees through a 12" into a Unimog but as I said I am starting out and if I do get offered any bigger jobs that require it, I can just hire and price that in.

Who uses smaller chippers here and just how much can I expect from them?

Thanks as always in advance :D

I would buy the best chipper you can afford. If you go for a small gravity fed chipper look at the size of the drum and the bottom of the feed shoot go for the biggest you can find. This makes feeding brash much easier otherwise you will have to cut it into small pieces or force it into the chipper which is dangerous. I started out with a lawn fight pro mounted on the front of a plant trailer. What a nightmare once you use a hydrolicly fed chipper you will never go back. i would say hire a few different machines until you find something you like. I now use a timberwolf 150

  6. try arborists knots for climbing and rigging by sharonj lily and peter donzelli. Honey brothers have an excellent selection of books. good luck with your tickets bud its a dodle

  7. hi guys been dismantle a horse chestnut no tpo not a conservation area either had a woman harrasin me later yesterday oh have you checked oh it's a shame then decided to have a go at the property owners then this morning saying that I or the home owner has to by law have a bat servay done and taken photos of mine van the tree ect no hollow limbs no cavity or anything suggesting bat habbiitaion is this true please asap

be careful with these people had one the other day that called the police and made a complaint that i had threatened him with a chainsaw. all my guys could vouch for me that this was a lie but the whole thing took 3 hours to sort out all the time i was still paying my crew. before i start a job now i knock on all the neighboughs doors and let them know what im doing that way you soon work out if some one is anti what you are doing and make sure your arse is water tight. i have even got some work from doing this so its not so bad
