  1. Can anyone advise me on which is the best log horse?

I like the ones that Makita do, though I tend to feel the one with the chain to hold down the logs is better than what Makita has with the mechanical arm.

I maybe incorrect but would appreciate your advice.

If you have a local sawmill .Ask them to make you one.

It does not cost much and will last you a lifetime .

    Or make one yourself .

  2. I'd like to get a chance to try one. Tbh I thing 20" is asking a bit much of any 60cc saw. I run a ported 357 on 15" 8pin, so I obviously favour speed.

I have a Echo branded 18 Sugi on it now.

When i purchased it was a 20 fitted or a Oregon 18 so took the 20.

Cost me £50 to order bar.

But is great on a 20 tbh.

  3. While abseiling down a cliff face to clear a log from a stream, I managed to dunk the saw, while running, in the stream. Fully submersed. Is this gonna be a carb strip down job or is there a simpler way to get it up and running?

I would pull exhaust .Look at cylinder .

  4. Well I picked mine up, got a good deal, £370, with a gallon of aspen, and they provided mine with the 15 inch bar.

Gave the saw an hour of logging, it's very nice in the hand, feels very well built, and looks it too, it's still a tight saw, but I am impressed with how it cuts, I thought it would be all revs and no torque at the cc it is, but no, it's got guts, I think I'm going to like this saw, more to come when it's got a few miles on the clock.

    I quite fancy one myself,Might flog my 420 to a friend that's keen on it & get a 390.

Thing is my 420 is superb so i dunno,Will be going to my local dealer to have a look @ one.

I seen that the chain tensioner is on the front off the 390,How is access to that?.

Seen a new release on shindaiwa website a 501sx looks identical to the 390 in shape/style.

  6. The time has come to actually choose what saw I'm having. The 3 options are now....

    1) ECHO CS 420-ES, 18" bar, second hand

    2) Stihl ms 181C-BE, 14 or 16" bar, brand new

    3) Husqvarna 236, 14" bar, brand new

If it was your choice which would you go for?

I'm swaying more towards the ECHO then the other two. I do have experience with both stihl and Husky saws but the stihl is the least powerful of the 3, and im not really impressed with the stihls we have at work (ms 211 iirc)

Again the husky isn't as powerful as the ECHO but I actually did my chainsaw course with husky saws so know more mechanical wise about these then the others! Though I would image most saws are similar with the way they are set out and need maintaining.

Do you have a compression gauge?

If you do check the compression on the Echo.

As its easy start its like pulling a bit of elastic to start it.

Mine was new in 2012 & has 150psi.

The manual quotes i think 127psi.

Its a really decent small saw.

Not needed one part for it.

  7. That saw will snort like a rhino with that 18 inch bar, give us a report on it please:001_smile:

For sure i initially wanted a 18 but dealer did not have the Echo Sugi bar it was fitted with a 20 & offered me a Oregon.

    But went with the 20.

Will let you know my thoughts on the 18 when i get it next week.

  8. Hey guys and girls, I'm sure you get fed up of these type of questions but as a newbie I need some advice!

I'm looking at getting my own saw and got a choice of 3 within my budget.

    1) A second hand ECHO cs 420-es

    2) A brand new husqvarna 236 (with free starter kit :thumbup1: )

    3) A stihl. Unfortunately won't know what model etc. until Tuesday.

Obviously a brand new saw is better then a second hand one but the husky is only a 14" bar where as the ECHO is an 18". From a quick Google search there doesn't seem to be much difference stats wise between the ECHO and Husky and also seems to be mixed reviews for the 236 where as ECHO have more good then bad reviews.

I would be using the saw for private jobs so would prefer the bigger bar and chain so I'm covered for all types of jobs I may get.

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated and when I find more info out about the stihl I shall let you know.

I have had a 420ES for about 3 years now not needed any parts so far.

It came with a 15 tsumura bar on it.

I wouldn't go any bigger bar wise for this saw.

Got rid of spark arrestor & dremeled out deflector.

Its a super saw loads of beans.

I recently checked the compression it was 150 psi & the manual quotes 127 psi.

    Pleased with it.

  9. Called local Echo dealer for a SRM 510 ES brush cutter air filter they did not have it.

Prior to this i ordered 2 non OEM from ebay .

They looked ok for a tenner , ,But compared to original was not as good.

But dealer got back to me to say can get me them Monday/Tuesday £7.

Plus asked about 18 for my 620SX which is a Sugihara pro solid with Echo logo for £50 in total so ordered.

    Again Mon/Tues.

Seen £62 for the sugi light pro.

So quite a decent turnaround for Echo plus reasonable price.
