  1. Hi all,

I am a groundsman and second climber looking for work in the Liverpool/Merseyside area. I have my own climbing kit, ppe and tickets:

Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-cutting, Fell and Process Trees up to 380mm, Tree Climbing and Rescue, Aerial Tree Pruning, Aerial Cutting/Free Fall Techniques, Aerial Tree Rigging, Safe Use of Manually Fed Wood-chipper, Safe Use of a Powered Pole Pruner

I also have a Level 3 in Arb and 5 years experience in the industry on a self-employed basis and sub-contracting on the railways. I have just got back from a year in Ontario Canada where I was working in forestry. I am moving from Preston to Liverpool early next month, so if anyone knows of any work in the area I’d appreciate a shout.

    Cheers

  2. I was wondering if it’s already well seasoned, since it’s been dead for quite some time. It feels and looks really dry. Also, would the cracks be an issue? I want to keep the shape of the tree so the boards look like tree rings, give them a good sanding down, smooth off the edges and then treat the wood.

Nice board there, really nice colour.

  3. Hi everyone,

I’ve managed to get my hands on some dead elm today and I want to make some chopping boards out of it. Seems a shame to burn it all as there’s so few elms left.

However as I’m a complete novice when it comes to carving and woodwork in general, could anyone point me in the direction of a workshop? Or if anyone knows of any courses as well. I live in Preston, Lancashire so anywhere around here would be good.

Got a few pictures, there’s some small cracks, doesn’t look very rotten, looks like it’s in pretty good shape to me. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    George

  4. Hi all,

Does anyone know anything about the RFS level 4 Qualification? Is it a worth while thing to do?

I'm considering doing it long distance, I want to learn more about woodland conservation, ecology and forestry so it seems like the right thing.

    Any information would be appreciated.

  5. Is the level 4 the equivalent to the first year of a degree?

As far as the abc compared with RFS, I'm thinking the same thing. 10 weeks does seem like too short a time to get the full Qual, the reason I'm considering it is because the modules look like my kind of thing, they go over veteran trees and woodland management. I'm going to call up tomorrow and see what the crack is. If the RFS one doesn't have the equivalent value of the abc one then I'll do the ABC one.

  6. Hi all,

I'm interested in doing a level 4 online arb qualification. I have my level 3 and I'm keen to progress but work at the same time and keep getting more experience with the practical side.

Myerscough college offer both a year long abc Qual and an RFS 10 week Qual. Does anyone have any experience or advice on whether its worth while and a good way to progress? Also does anyone have any idea on how much it would cost?

And if anyone has done an online level 4 anywhere else that they were really pleased with give me a shout.

    Cheers,

    George

  7. Hi all, I just wanted to get some advice on how I can take my arb education forward a bit.

I've been in the industry for just over 2 years now, I have a level 3 Btec diploma in forestry and arb and 8 nptc's.

I'm really interested in woodland, conservation and ecological issues and I'd like to find some way to combine academic knowledge with practical skills.

If anyone has any ideas about what track I can go down I'm open to any suggestions. Short courses, placements, online quals or day courses, anything else you can think of. Also, If there's a way I can carry on climbing and study that would be perfect.

    Cheers,

    George
