Hi
I have this sometimes. I scrunch up LOTS of newspaper, maybe 10 sheets, then build several layers of kindling on top in a grid, with a small log on top of the kindling.
Open all vents, light it and close the door. The wood burner will probably fill with smoke, and you may get a little smoke out the vent, but as soon as enough paper is burning and it generates enough heat, the heat will force up the chimney and switch direction of the air flow, then you can open the door a little if you need to give it some more air.
Works every time for me, good luck!

any chance of scavenging a log (8" or over please) if it is manna ash.
i'd like that species for the wood database.
Ha sure, but i'm in the midlands. You up this way at all?

Just got the logs out my car, and they deffo have an ash likeness, and my first thoughts when i saw them was Ash. Never heard of Manna Ash though. Will look it up

Ahh i thought the logs look like ash, but then thought the regrowth didn't look like ash.
Thanks

Thanks for everyone's help with this. Saw some field maple on a walk yesterday and would agree with this.
Thanks

Its quite heavy and been cut for a while so would have lost a lot of moisture already.

I've had beetles emerging from Ash before. Think they just ate the bark though.

Just had a look and mine is a Brennenstuhl 1298680, although I paid double what you can get it for now.

I've got one of the stihl type moisture meters but rebranded and looks exactly the same, and found that if you leave it in cupboard, turned off with brand new batteries in they still went flat and it was no use. The batteries i bought were duracell and in date, so I blamed the meter and bought a different brand that takes 9v battery and has auto power off in case you leave it on. I could turn it on now after a year and it would still work. Ok, so I don't know how accurate it is, but at least it turns on when i want it to and it seems to give realistic results, although I cant compare with another meter.
