i will do my best as its very simple, basically its down to gearing like the pic above small sprocket on drive end the a much bigger sprocket on the receiving end , most pto winches 540 rpm in and about 50 rpm out , our igland 4201 retrieves the line at 0.9 mtrs a second and will still do that when there is a couple of tonne on the end and it takes some effort to keep up with it across a woodland thats got brash every where, if you are going to buy one buy new if you have the work for it or pm him about the one above that he is taking to burnley auction.

Thanks.... and yes I am buying new ...getting a Uniforest twin 85G ...was going to run one side on the Stratos winch Pro rope...very expensive but Im hoping it will pay by saving me from regretting not having it every time Im dragging the other up hill :-)

  2. If you remove enough baffle you dont nessaserily need to fit another exit pipe ( although it looks good if you do ) you can just open out the existing one with a dremel . So first job ....remove the spark arrester screen and put it in a draw . ( some sites insist on one being fitted ) and get cutting/drilling/welding etc etc ...:001_smile:

sorry but whats a draw ?

  3. Ok...Ive been avoiding asking anymore questions cos Im starting to look like I dont know what Im talking about ;-)

But lets just go for it....

Right...baffles...where might I find these and when I do what shall I do to them ...Im guessing its the inside of the exhaust and I need to remove, by drilling, to allow better airflow ?

The exit pipe...again just drill a hole as in the picture in the previous post ...and weld a tidy finish on it ?

    Thanks

  4. Thanks mate....so do you just cut a hole for the pipe ...are there any modifications behind the hole...or is that then a straight flow through ? and the baffle i take it just needs levering wider ?

You don't have to cut and shut, the mufflers that have been done by Spud and I were not. The baffle needs widening more and a larger outlet.

That is mine, you probably want a smaller pipe.

  5. Yeah ok...fair enough :-) Just loctite'd them though din I ...and I wasnt sure of the procedure so I thought I'd see .....now stop making out im stoopid...thats my wifes job.

So....Its exhaust off !! then cut n shut ...any further guidance would be very much appreciated ...and obviously needed !! :blushing:

  6. Stein Explorers mate ...easy choice...theyre a brilliant fit and so comfortable.

I had some before and have just got a new pair from Radmore last week...they are now made from a new cut of leather which is apparently more water resistant....and they look great...best looking boots there.

Those Husky Technicals have apparently been selling very well but in my opinion they will give in all the wrong places ...you can see it when you TRY and walk in them..theyre going to end up loose with no support....and I just couldn't face the week of misery you'd have to go through breaking them in ...OUCH !!!

Im telling you now you wont be disappointed with the Explorers...they're spot on.

    In my opinion !!

  7. As I said I run my 560xp on an 18" bar.....and I carved my very first bear with it no problem...got a bit bored one afternoon and made it for my wife and our boys....

    2014_03_28_14_53_21.jpg

took me about half an hour to carve it....but took me and my cousin an hour and a half to carry the bloody thing to my truck :cursing:

The boys loved it when I got it home.... its been tidied up a little and a few adjustments here and there....the finished bear now stands proudly in our back garden

  8. Depends what your doing. Thinnings, sure 15" 8t is optimal. In arb (specifically climbing) fast cutting isn't the be all and end all. How many climbers would take a 372 with an 18" bar up a tree?

I run my 357 "GTI" with a 15" 8t and it's incredibly quick. It's also bloody heavy for the bar size, hence it is a dedicated ground saw.

Yeah sorry Im not a climber..I was saying more from the forestry side of things...and like I said I run an 18 on mine just cos its good enough for me and I doubt Id notice an amazing difference...I'll stick a 15 with a 3/8 sprocket on at some point when Im bored and see for myself.

  9. I was talking to one of the blokes at the APF show this year ...he was working with Richard Elliot in the Husqvarna team ... and they said the 18 inch is simply too much for the 560 xp ..it will run it..but the cutting speed is reduced so much down a tree compared to running a 15 inch with the 3/8 sprocket that he only ever uses a 15 with 3/8.

and Richard Elliot can f##king cut ...and that wasn't the speed cutting competition ..that was a demo down a tree....brilliant.

  10. Make sure the handle that operates the clutch is returning all the way back when released, on mine if it hasn't been used for a while the lever sticks a bit, and makes it drag a bit, a quick spray and work the lever back and forth a few times sorts it.

Thanks Craig....I will look closely at the winch over the weekend....what sort of price is a full service on a winch like this then ?

    Thanks

  11. Make your own helmet. Spec it how you want. 'Forestry helmets' are simply helmets with a mesh visor and ear defenders, and a high price tag.

You need to work out what slots your chosen helmet has. Euro slots are the most common. Then you choose the ear defenders you want, with a helmet mount for that slot. Then you can add visors etc.

Tell me exactly what you want and I'll tell you how to do it. Bin the helmet and start over- a brand new shiny vented reduced peak helmet is only a tenner, and much lighter than the Husky.

    Thanks again.

I quite like the look of this helmet but tell me what you think....

Basically I was after a FM Radio helmet set up...for the old Forestry ...originally looked at the "Husky" set ...but you advised to stay away...which I will most definitely do....so now I am after a set up that works well ...strong...and allows for the fact I sweat like you wouldnt believe !!! I had sweat running out of my ear defenders INTO my ears today...fuuuuuck.

Now bothered about MP3 just radio will do me...

Dont really want to spend a fortune cos I know how long stuff lasts in the woods...but I also dont want to waste money on crap either....so any advice is welcome mate.

    Thanks

  12. Thank you Doobin...Ive done a fair amount of winching but never new anything about tractors pto speeds etc ...so thanks:thumbup1:

Also...Im going to start looking in to making the radio ear protectors you described to me a while ago....I will find the original post hopefully...but just wondered if you had any further advice or tips....or even if you had a pair you might want to sell ?

I doubt you'll remember but I wanted them to fit my Husky helmet ...not sure if you advised a whole new helmet now...but I will be needing the visor ect ...?

Anyway....my missus wants to watch eastenders so I better go now.

    Thanks

  13. Thank you all.

I will contact AT Osborne tomorrow sometime ....thanks for the pointer.

Brushcutter...that would be great if you could dig out that info ...will hopefully save a lot of time mate..thanks.

I spoke to somebody i know just now and they said any tractor with 33 hp or above will run it ? as long the PTO runs at 550 ????

This is getting far too complicated now :001_smile: ...anybody know more on this ?

Thank you all for your replies.

  14. Hello all....I just wondered if somebody could tell me what HP Tractor is needed to run a 6.5 tonne Fransgard winch ?

Also on a slightly seperate note...how do you adjust the clutch on one as it is apparently slightly pulling when you pull it out ?

Any advice will be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

  15. The speed cutter...also a full timer obviously...was using a 560 xp ..3/8 with 15 inch bar...but unfortunately I didnt get round to asking about sprocket etc.

I think I am going to go for the 3/8 on a 15 and try both sprocket sizes...only as a learning curve for my own knowledge...I have always just used the saw as they came..never even knew about the different sprockets and speeds etc...again..lack of knowledge :blushing:

Anyway...thank you all for your help...I will let you know how I get on.

    Thank you
