Small woodland owners buy for a whole other set of reasons too.
Wildlife fans, bushcrafters and/or DIY firewood people, many who get there own chainsaw tickets.
Cheers
lots of people are investing for non timber benefits, Inheritance Tax, Sporting and increasing value of the land its self

I own a small part of an ancient wood, im currently restoring the PAWs parts of it. I wouldnt sell it for any sort of development. I know many small woodland owners who feel the same way.

Thank you for your reply.
i bought a 365 from f r jones if you use the decomp your for ever be pulling it to start use it with out and it will start easy 3rd pull -
No idea.
Ive mailed husky with the chassis number so they should twig if its not.
Bought from a husky dealer so I hope its genuine
Cheers
Just start it without pushing in decomp then . Little bit more strain on starter mech but not a disaster ......Just a thought ..it is a Genuine Husqvarna not a Chinese clone ??

Hi
Saw is a brand new husky 365
Oil fuel is 50:1
Plug has blue spark and is gaped correctly
This saw will not start with the decompression button in.
It will only start if you dont press the button in
What am I doing wrong. The manual says to press in the button.
Is the saw ok, does it need to go back.
Cant ask dealer questions as they are shut at the moment
Cheers

Im trying to understnad what makes a timber quality Larch tree
DBH around 40cm
TD from 15cm upto around 40cm
&
Straight.
How straight to they have to be. Dead straight, or are is the odd kink allowed
for example some of the trees I have, have flaws around 18m up.
At what height are forks ok ?
Cheers
-
Thank you just what I needed to know
A crod of wood takes up 3.63m3 but it only contains say 2.4m3 of wood. The rest is spaces. This will bulk out if split and thrown in a bag to about 4.3m3. This would equate to about 7 and a bit builders bags.Answer to second question, it depends on the species. Density varies from say 830kg/m3 for Japanese Larch to 1020kg/m3 for Scots Pine.
A 3.63m3 block of the first would weigh 3.0 tonnes. A 3.63m3 block of the latter would weigh 3.7 tonnes. But a cord of wood is 1/3 space between logs. So you can say a cord of the former is 2.0 tonnes and of the latter is 2.5 tonnes.
-
Far too much effort if im wanting to sell a load though
the best way to find out is to buy a load split it,bag, then count the bags hey presto ,the amswer is there -
How builder bags out of a cord of round wood ?
Can somebody check my maths ?
Cord 4ft x 4ft x 8ft
Builderbag 850x850x850 (0.6m3)
1 cord = 3.63m3 solid
1 cord = 3.63m3 solid or 5.8m3 loose (based on 1m3 solid = 1.6m3 loose)
So 5.8m3 loose = 9 or 10 builderbags (0.6m3)
Please can someone point out any errors or give a better estimate
Also is one cord softwood wet around 2.6tons ?
Cheers

thanks for the explanation

TD = Top diameter (so the diameter of the thin end of a sawn length).I probably worded it a bit badly - I should have said highest price band rather than top grade as that was maybe a bit confusing.
Sawlogs into Taylormade are/were 150mm min TD up to 400mm (could be 450 but we've not sent any since last year) over that they become oversize and the price dropped by £4/T from memory.
-
Hi Chris
Could you explain why over 40cm TD is not top grade. Is TD the same as 40cm DBH? If not what is TD ?
What is the range in cm for top grade larch
Cheers
Size wise, you might be lucky enough to sneak all the sawlogs in at the top grade (i.e not over 40cm TD) which would add a little more value to it.

Once the plans is finalised ill be happy to post exact details and people would be welcome to come and look at it
Roughly where about in Yorkshire is it - Yorkshire covers a big area.Unfortunately, no one's going to make any sort of offers without actually having seen it.
Small sites can be viable, it's all about getting the right guys with the right gear who can put the wood into the right markets
-
Its a small wood around 6acres
Not all the wood is larch, theres is a mixed stand, a larch stand and a hardwood stand.
I want to remove the larch or at least some of it because its an ancient wood (PAWS), and putting hardwoods back in would be good.
Also it's not the number of trees more the weight. Also if they're spread out all over the place (along tracks etc) then hand cutting isn't really viable on a tonnage basis. Especially if you need to clear brash up. Why are you so keen to remove them? What hectareage are you managing? You could get the whole wood thinned with a small cf under a wood fuel wig. (funded harvesting) with an offset for funds raised from the timber against the wig. You can also get grants for timber surveys. Obviously the greater the area the better the funding. -
Theres possibly 100 to 150 larch trees i need removing.
How many trees do i need to make it viable ?
If I can't at least get paid what it would cost me to replant hardwoods theres no point in me selling.
Management plan is being written and will cover thinning and felling cetain areas with replanting. Approval in principle has been given by both FC and LC.
I will measure heights they all look the small height to me and were all planted in the same year
Cheers
Due to the small amount of timber there's no way you can make it viable with a machine (not mech Harv. I'm talking tractor/timber trailer) unless your neighbour has one. Do you have a management plan and felling licence in place? If some one is willing to do the work foc for the timber you've had a result. Where in Yorkshire is the timber? Alongside dbh you'll also need heights. Area to be worked. If possible planting year/age. Good luck! -
Feel free to pm and offer
Cheers
Hi, I could be interested if the price is right!Cheers
-
I will thank you. The vast majority of them are straight with no forks
Cheers
They sound the same size as I've felled recently. 43" circumference, about 18m of stick + crown on top. If you can, take some notes on straightness as well. -
you have a pm
Roughly where in Yorkshire is it. -
Theres a lot more than 20 trees. Those were the first 10 I measured from each of the 2 areas.
Im going to buy a clinometer. then mark count and measre all the trees
Cheers
You could advertise it on woodlots, but I'd talk to the local firewood guys. Unfortunately 20 trees would struggle to cover the lowloader costs of moving machinery any distance -
For those interested ive measure 10 larch trees in each stand at random

Standing
Are you selling standing or roadside? -
Site has good access.
Hardcore track right to edge of wood
All trees less than 30m from a 4x4 dirt track
Level well drained site in Yorkshire
All trees 60 years old, look to have had lower branches removed in the past
One 30m x 30m pocket to be clear felled (already been thinned)
one 10m x 60m poccket, larch to be removed from hardwood stand (not previously thinned)
Odd larch trees along other 4x4 tracks
From reading this forum i know now i need to take some DBH measurements.
What the best way of doing this.
Is there any advantage to measuring and marking all the trees I want removing.
Anyone estimate the height of the larch?
What the best place to sell when I have all the information.
Cheers
