  1. Just to say thanks again. Runs like a dream and actually cuts timber.
  2. Many thanks Spud. Kinda figured it should but as it's a first time rebuild I'm seriously glad I asked. Will get it all together in the morning with good light. Hope this post might have helped a few others with similar problems now or in the future. All the best Jon
  3. Brilliant Piston arrived this morning, great service there. Just a quick query before I fit it. On top of the piston is engraved " mp A = -> " ... just wondering if the direction of the arrow is indicating the exhaust port or does it not matter? Can't see why it should but worthy checking.
  4. Ah! I noticed a bit of roughness there pre treatment. I'll check again, but think it's all clear now. Wonder if it was that buildup coupled with running hot that caused the problem. Must have been something floating around to wreck the piston like it did.
  5. Thanks Spud, think this is a one piece filter. Here are the cleaned up bore pics. Anything looking like grit is fluff off the cloth. Stripped and rebuilt the clutch break, several times as couldn't quite figure the b***h out. Goes on with a nice sharp snap now. Basically the grease and dust had built up to stop the main spring compressing enough, and clogged other bits. Cleaned out everything inside and out of the casing so just awaiting the new piston. Back once it arrives. Jon Is there a section covering hedge trimmers here? Got a Kawasaki I need to re-tune.
  6. Getting there. Wasn't much fizzing down the bore and the cotton bud lifted a lot of it. Gave it a gentle rub down with some 240 and let it go smoothe to polish it. Generally looking much better. Still got a hint of what looks more like polishing stripes (?) from the old ring top to bottom. Do I need to lose those to, even if it's no longer fizzing? No nasty scrapes or gouging thankfully. Fuel filter. Does this split to clean out or do I just give it a good wash in clean fuel? Pics tomorow in good light.
  7. Well it's on but with no obvious fizzing yet. When I was a kid I dropped some soda down my wellie. I have a 2" round scar to prove it. CS tries to turn any flesh to soap as it reacts with natural oils etc. I go cautious.
  8. Great, glad I checked on that one. No score lines just some redistributed ali transfer. Got the piston ordered. Many thanks
  9. Has anyone got any contacts or recomendations for suppliers of English Walnut? I occasionally have need of air dried planks. Working on old flintlocks, these can be upto 50" long and 2.5-3" thick - no sapwood. Commercial stock tends to be pre cut lengths for shotguns which are too short and too thin. Just need a few names to put on the file. Many thanks Jon
  10. Yup, got that about. What sort of strength and how long? Do you plug the inlets or dunk the whole thing in the mix? Thanks for the link, I'll be on to them later.
  11. Hi Spud Any preferred acid or alkali? I have loads a chems about from working on old flintlocks and stuff. Grits up to 1200 I think. Guess I just Google Meteor or is there an address to hand? Jon
  12. Thanks fellas. Sounds encouragin then. Meteor, where? Bore cleaner?
  13. Right, sorted Here ya go with the pics. Just tried the piston with ring back in the barrel. Thumb over plug hole and a reasonable compression. Takes a second or 2 to reach the top. What do we reckon. The inside barrel markings are more like a polished surface, can't feel any ridging etc. Do the pics appear here or just sit in the folder?
  14. OK taken pics but how do I get them up here? Can't do cut and paste and I've no url (image insert above requests url) to plant them on. The piston's well scraped up but apart from discolouring below the ports the inside cylinder is smooth. It never seized solid, just lost compression.
  15. Well here's hoping. It's fairly well in bits at this stage so a real good chance to give it a total clean down. Found a crack in the fuel pipe so far. Washed out the air filter which wasn't that bad. Fuel - how old is old? Might be 6 monts + is that old? Is the fuel filter in the tank or the carb reservoire? The clutch break went on as I lifted it off - I recall having a struggle getting it off before - I think it's a strip and re-set from memory. Jon
