  2. Security is only a matter of time and a determined tea leaf will get in. your options are as I see it may be

    1. buy or hire a site security container with internal secure storage some thing like a van vault to keep the more expensive items in.
    2. Build a secure garage with an internal constructed vault (mass concrete with plenty of rebar and a secure door double locked)
    3. hire a lock up in one of them storage sites.
    4. Build a standard shed with a container inside and plenty of cameras about as well as some hidden ones.

A very good friend of mine built a workshop with 225 reinforced concrete walls 2.5m high (he is a concrete / shuttering contractor) cladding to eves and roof. Inside he built a vault with 225mm wall and roof. the door was from a oil sub station with additional reinforcing and lockbox to prevent access to the lock. Anyway James locked up one Friday morning checked everything was locked up laser tooling gas axe etc, left with the wife to go to a wedding. At 1300 a neighbour was out walking passed his house and yard and saw a VW transporter parked in the yard, knowing James was away she queried the person only to be told he was a sub contractor collecting equipment. Two men had gone to the back of the building removed a sheet of cladding gained access then opened the main door, they backed in the van and proceeded to work. They weren't seen leaving but the peelers reckon they were there for a least two hours, brought their own gas axe and cut the door off to gain access. Cleaned him out consaws concrete chainsaw snap on tool kit the works, nothing ever was recovered. Insurance paid out after 6 months but declined to renew the protection for the workshop.

Was told by the peelers that cameras were a waste of time as was an alarm.

So at what point do you call it quits and say the replacement of equipment is cheaper than the cost of security..................................

Does that apply to one bought as a spare that has been sitting in its original box in a dark cupboard, unused for five years?

How would you prove that to the person in shiny shoes with a clip board?....................................

that is the reason I use the Peltor brand with the age disc

Thanks for the reply Doug - there's very few training providers here in Ireland and I've found finding the right courses/path is a bit of a nightmare. So much so that I'd consider doing them in the UK. I have plenty of family I can stay with there at least.

I'm a shipwright/boatbuilder. I used to have my own yard - and a stationary sawmill and have worked in other yards where they ran small sawmills, it's long been an interest of mine and I'm becoming increasingly more passionate about it.

Just make sure that what ever certification meets the Irish criteria as since Brexit a lot of UK ones seem to fall short, to the best of my knowledge none of the UK CSCS tickets are recognized in the republic and I hesrd that the air conditioning guys had to redo their City & Guilds qualifications. So if spending that kind of money have a chat with Coillté or KTC .......................................................................................

  5. The valve I have shown here from the catalogue is the one I have fitted to my splitter. In 3 years it hasn't missed a beat. I have a high flow rate on my pump and only 3/8" hoses to my ram from the valve so the hi-speed / rapid extend is of no great benefit even though it is on the valve.

When I bought my valve from McHugh components via my local agri dealer it was only €120 incl of all taxes and delivery + dealer mark up. Them boys you linked to from fleabay are taking the pixx I believe............

  6. If you are pricing the whole job you are responsible for the non-performance of any subcontractor .In law there is privity of  contract, this means that the client has a contract with you and not the subcontractor the only way to remove this risk is to have the client split the work into two contracts and have it priced accordingly.

Clauses in method statements or term & conditions will not absolve you of any non-performance.

  7. I don't think it would be fast enough to drive a chain effectively, a bandsaw blade would be more appropriate for a 4 stroke.

The 4 stroke would have a bit more torque so I would think it'll be possible to gear up the drive for the chain to achieve a respectable speed..........
