Evening Chaps, What's the going rate for a good full time climber, five years under his belt, own climbing gear but no other tools etc, employed by a company and subject to PAYE? Asking beacuse I want to pay my guy a fair rate.

Hi All. Very many thanks for your good suggestions. Particularly liked Mattmoss' suggestion as it's always good to think outside the box - we can get too blinkered in our thinking sometimes. However, I'm going along with C. speciosa as my second guess was C. bignonioides but the heartwood was the wrong colour and smell. It's a shame as the tree is on a development site, has partially collapsed and is scheduled for removal. So it goes... -
This is a mature tree, recently partially collapsed. Height: 6m Single stout bole, several wide-spreading and heavily twisted boughs. Bark: grey, rough, thick, heavily fissured. Wood: pale buff; heartwood darker but no distinctive colour. No odour. Buds: single but arise in partial whorls of three. Middle bud arises on opposite side to preceding middle bud. Indistinct, small and purple-brown. Distinctive leaf-scars: pale with dark rim. Leaves: not fully out yet. Deciduous, smooth margin, flushing coppery / red, quickly turning green, lance shaped. At first, leaf bases are asymmetrical (like elm) but soon become symmetrical. Twigs: bark smooth, grey. Wood pithy with no smell. I've rejected: oak, walnut, tree of heaven, various Acers, golden rain tree, Catalpa, Kentucky coffee tree. Help!!!

All clean, no timber, dirt or rubbish but will be green. We normally send ours off with Tilhill or Stobart so it's saleable but not the sort you could put straight into a boiler.

Vacancy for a full time arborist climber in Hertfordshire, initially for a three-month period but expected to develop into a foreman / team leader position. Minimum qualifications are: NPTC A06, CS38/39, and five years continuous experience of industrial climbing. A full, clean UK driving licence with +E entitlement is also required. Trees aren't down yet, mate - if all goes to plan I'd say in about 3 or 4 weeks time. Or could move it my yard for a while to await onwards use.

Hi All. I've got two large deodar cedar to remove in Welwyn GC which look like they'll yield a fair amount of timber (20-22m x 80cm dbh). Access is reasonable, level site, etc. Seems a crying shame to ring 'em up for firewood. Any suggestions?

Hi Rob I don't have photos but can get some easily enough. They're in a residential area in Welwyn GC. Access is down a single track tarmac road with a turning circle (a wide one, like a roundabout) at the end. The trees themselves are set just inside a driveway. There's room for a several vehicles / trailers on the driveway and the whole site's fairly level. Total weight of useable timber I guess about 7 tons (based on how many runs I reckon it'd take to get it into my yard). The upper parts of the trunks would have to come down on lowering kit so I reckon 2m lengths as max. There's something of a low hedge at the base of the trees but if the clients can tolerate a bit of damage to it then I guess around 5m might be feasible.

Firstly, my bad: it was an MS250, not a 150 as I previously stated - damn typo. Secondly, I have an answer: an incorrect carb had been fitted. The part that came off was a Zama C1Q-S87D which fits an MS210; the correct part for an MS250 is a C1Q-S85D. It's an easy mistake to make as the Stihl part numbers only differ by a single digit. However, it was fitted four months ago by someone who really should have known better so I feel a bit let down...

Thanks everyone - good advice much appreciated. I'll give the warranty route a go first, then replace the carb which'll give me an opportunity to pull apart the current one and educate myself a little (God knows I need it!).

Morning All, My MS150 looses revs and power at full throttle. I've changed the fuel filter, cleaned the air filter, spark plug, breather filter and stripped down the carb to clean the gauze. On rebuilding the saw and re-tuning it seems to run OK but on restarting later the same problem comes back again. It's the same fuel in all my saws so I don't think that's the problem. One other thing, there seems to be a strong smell of petrol whenever the saw is left standing in the tool shed. Could it be a leaking diaphragm?

My first contribution to the forum: my MS201T was taken last Thursday. Stolen from right under my nose would you believe! Serial number 1-73-947-958 with 'C Trees' written in black marker across the air filter cover. You know what to do if you're offered it...
