  1. Hi guys, been thinking about going self employed for a while now!! Just wonder if any of you cool kids have any advice for me like, savings before hand, accounts, work!! That kinda stuff.

All advice will be taken on board. Kierran.

  2. The firm you work for,i believe is responsible for all your ppe,

    That is concrete!

With respect to tool allowance,i'm looking into.

I get £200 a mth allowance for machinery, climbing gear etc.

This allowance is part of my my salary of which i'm taxed,

Am i able to claim the vat back on my spends?

    I believe yes.

    Any thoughts or experiences fellas?

    Cheers kev

Wow your a lucky guy!! It's like getting blood from a stone with my employer;) when they finally see your boots hanging off your feet they give you a shitty pair of big ass boots!! Kinda like the old diving boots lol. Hence why I buy my own gear.

  3. No to the VAT on stuff, you cant claim that back at all, no way.

Fuel costs for driving to work? No way, everyone has to drive to work! Im guessing you mean driving to your bosses yard and back everyday? Everyone has to drive to work so no you cant claim a thing there.

PPE and equipment? Mmmmm, maybe, you cant get the money back but you might get a tax rebate on the money you spent on it, you would need to do a tax return at the end of the year. So if your boss is paying your tax through PAYE and you have spent lets say 1000 on stuff (total price including the VAT on it) then you might be able to get the tax on 1000 of your income returned. An accountant would be more help than me.

Another way might be (some companies do this) your employee sets aside 1000 of you income for kit that you need to buy, and then pays your tax on the rest of your income. Both methods would be similar, i,e you get about 250 of tax back.

Thanks for that pal:) will speak with my boss!!

  4. If you speak to Allen, mention I passed you on their link. They've got some good courses / instructors so hope it works out for you. Might even see you there one day!

Yeah course bud, will keep you updated dude:)

  5. Cheers guys;) I'm already dragging brash all day and have a basic Knowledge but was thinking of maybe upping my understanding of tree science and I figured a tree ident course/class would point me in the right direction!! It's one thing cutting a tree but understanding the tree and how it grows, when and how it can be cut is another:)

Anyhow, thanks for the comments and I will start with a garden centre and a good tree book and take it from there.

  6. What I did when I started was google tree surgeons and your area!! Then write a letter stating what you can offer them! Like being a hard worker, very keen to learn. Then copy and paste to all company's in area.

I received a handful of replies all not what I was hoping for!! But I didn't give in, I then saved for a few weeks and got my cs30. Then tried again, sent the same letter to the same company's with the extra course. It went a long way dude. I got 2 offers for work. I guess I shown willing, which went a long way. Also don't work for free!!! It is a very hard trade which will give you mental and physical damage on a day to day basis;) enjoy, relax and wait dude. It will all fall into place.

  7. Make the jump, you won't look back! I did and it was the best decision ever!

Anyway I just wanted to make another point. Depending on the scale of what you are doing it may be worth looking at the smaller chippers like the timberwolf 125 or greenmech 130. You need to consider your business plan and costings for monthly repayments. If you have this money available in a lump sum it is better (in my experience) to NOT pay out in one lump and instead spread the cost. This way you will have capital for other stuff (such as a box structure on the truck once you have it) and also give you a fall back when work is lean.

If you, like me, plan to do other stuff other than just tree surgery then look at a smaller chipper - the greenmech i mentioned above is featured here in this short video I did of ours, keep meaning to do more but never have the time!
