  1. Hi I have bought a big stihl saw I was told it was a 075

But I am not sure as there is no name tag on it

The trouble is it looks the same as a 051

It has no manual oiler or decompression button

I have listed it on eBay for sale and don't want anyone buying it by mistake

Is there any way of finding out what it is

    I know it's a 1978. Model

    Any help would be great

  2. Does any one run a 660 on a 42" bar

I run one with a 30" bar and it runs that with ease

    Sometimes I need something bigger

    I have a husky 3120 but only with a 30" bar

The price for a new bar for the husky is to much but can pick up a 42" one for the stihl for under £100 with chain

The stihl the better saw to use as the husky is a bit of a beast

  3. Paid £50 at local auction

Been looking at it today and think it's a 076 as the oil filler caps on the side not top

As there is no name plate on it

Got a 30"404 bar and chain. Starts and runs a treat.

Setting up the carb a bit fiddle with the saw jumping around on the bench

Hoping to give it a workout in the week on some big oak I'll let you now how I get on

  4. I used it today and it seems fine on the small logs up to 6" but struggles on the bigger stuff

It light enough to take in the back of a pick up

My mate wants £400 for it is that a bit to much

I would pay that for a good saw

I made 3 nets of kindling in about 10 minutes

    Let me now your thoughts

  5. Looking for a tractor to buy in Devon to run a 5 ton winch and log splitter

Anything considered doesn't have to look pretty just working order cheaper the better 2or4wd must have working pto and spool valves Please let me know if you have anything

  6. Sounds like the same lads I saw in Plymouth

When I was working on site in millbay

They were putting the saws together outside there caravan

It looked like neilson saws and ther had pressure washer as well

Police moved them on and said they where on there way to London

I wouldn't buy a clothes peg off this lot

  7. whats the best for pulling out timber tractor or crawler with winch

theres no road work, all in woods on tracks i whas thinking about 90 to 100 hp

or what about tractor and trailer with grab ,it is fairly steep so well need 4 wheel drive

what sort of price for a good crawler or tractor

  8. hi can any one help ,i have been offered a 11 acre wood of mixed hard wood

access is good to half ,but a lot of winching ,the other half is a bit more tricky ,needs a lot of thinning ,can take out what i want just have to leave the big oaks

i can store it on site and am thinking of buying a crawler and winch

just wanted to no what i sould be paying as this is the first time for me and is it worth the hassel

    look forward to your replies:thumbup:

  9. i agree with you there is no protection for the seller,i have sold saws to buyers that say they are unhappy with them and send them back ,when i have checked them over i find that they have swapped parts over and some times i get back a different saw.

i had one buyer open a case becouse he said he never received the saw but forgot to mention that he moved house and forgot to change his adrress on ebay ,and another buyer that put petrol in the fuel tank and two stroke oil in the chain oil tank thinking it mixed it up itself and blamed me when it blow up.

funny how i seem to always be wrong:confused1:

  10. Only worth what people are willing to pay, Stick it on the bay in an auction and let the masses decide.

Prices on there seem to be slipping at the moment for good honest saws, cant understand why people pay a fortune for "spares or repairs" or "just got it out of the shed and it wont start" saws. My reckoning is that these saws are being bought up by DIY repairers, given a new chinese top end and the oily rag treatment and resold as just serviced, owned from new saws. There is a lot more to fixing one than that.

I had a 260 and a 250 in the other week with chinese top end on that came off ebay, the 260 was leaking from both crank seals and seized, the new owner had only run it for 5 mins and the 250 had what i can only describe as veseline to seal the cylinder. I did a report on both and they are being persued through paypal for a full refund.

i now what you mean i buy a lot of saws and some times you get bit in the ass ,i try to be as honest as i can and only sell saws that i would be happy with myself

i bought a ms 260 that whas sold to me with so called good compresion

but whas in fact seized solid ,but as it whas sold as parts or not working there is nothing can do ,just have to strip it for parts?

  11. Sorry.thats a bit vague. As Landrover 101 says, could be plug, or coil, or it could be stop control wiring, or flywheel magnets, or HT lead.

    Have you done any tests?

also, is it actually an 07, or an 070 076 etc?

I'm also a bit confused by your name, I initially thought that 'chainsaw surgeon' meant that you mended chainsaws, but I am guessing you doctor trees with a chainsaw?

saw all up and running ,some one had wired up the stop switch wrong way round

    it is a 07

saw now runs like a dream

think i might sell it, whats it worth

  12. Yeah, Gardenkit is on the money, verify the way you tested thew saw, try checking a known good saw and compare figures! Was the bore OK, was the plating OK, if seized- was the aluminium transfer removed?

The compression on these saws can read a little low but 135psi is more realistic and 145 psi when run in!

It may be fuel related, the metering arm being too low have been the problem on the last two in!

hi how do you check the metering arm?
