Ive heard this BS before, and whenever i hear it now i just ask why? and no instructor has given me a reasonable answer yet. none of them know why its just what they have been told or heard before. Metal to metal is common place and ever best practise in other industries so i feel fine about it.
Yes with rescue etc its handy to have a cut away but to have a soft link between every metal to metal junction is madness.
With twisting forces and cross loading i think this is a no issue, im willing to bet a krab is stronger under toque than a sling? and krabs are designed with a healthy cross load breaking force, more than you could generate under normal work and certainly more than your spine can take.

Starts first pull when hot, so whats your prob?
People get all worked up over this auto tune thing. dont mess with it, dont try to reset it, dont worry about it.
Its not called 'manual' tune, its 'auto' tune. Everything you need to know about it is in the name ;-)

028av was my first saw and im gutted i sold it, its a great saw! brand new at £120 i would have two of them given the chance. you'll get you money back on ebay all day long.
Getting spares for them is a nightmare tho, the only reason i sold mine.

Just to be clear, and I appreciate the op could have been misleading, the only attachment to the suspect part of the tree is for work positioning eg with a flip line.
-
I would definitely be interested

Thanks David Dobedoe, I think your the only one here that understands what I'm on about.

I like the cable tie idea, gear loop could work also.

Ive heard of a few accidents recently involving been tied into a limb as a secondary with say a lanyard or flip line for work positioning and then that limb snapping out and taking the climber with it.
Im thinking why dont harness have a 'soft' link that will break in these situations freeing the climbing from the secondary and falling onto the primary?
I realize it would be open to misuse but im thinking of adding a loop of low strength cord to my side 'D' only to be clipped as a secondary and only when i think the limb could snap.
What ya think?

Just started trying a blakes hitch on a hitch climber and seems to work well, anyone know why its not used more often, something im missing maybe.
Also i hear a blakes should be the same dia as you climbing line? mines 2mm less but works just fine, whats the justification for it been the same?

I thought this was going to be a really in depth, informative and useful post.
Its non of that and so much better :-)

Thats interesting, as winter is most recommended as the time to prune, (exceptions withstanding)
So are we saying even with the trees reduced defences it still out weighs pruning at other times of the year?
ie the affect of loosing photosynthetic mass at a time of need and that pathogens are more prevalent at warmer temps, etc...
I thought of another.Beech has a heavily suberized barrier zone (not all trees do) which makes it very difficult for organisms to cross. One of the problems with using micro drills to investigate is that it breaches the barrier zone and its suberin defence.
Timing of pruning. Trees have a reduced phenol index during their dormant season meaning that wound response is minimal during the winter. Tylosis is also temperature dependent and does not occur at very low temperatures. Reaction zones may not form at all in some species at very low temperatures.
The list goes on!!!

Nobody said trees are clever! its the process thats clever.
you could say that everything is simply the conclusion of a sequence of trial and error iterations, does that make a human or any animal or machine for that matter, less clever?
Trees aren't clever!Over a million years of small and large mutations, successful mutations are rewarded by making it to reproductive maturity and pass on the successful genes. Tree speciae adaptations may appear clever but they are really the result of millions and millions of unplanned trial-and-error experiments. Basic Darwinian stuff.
It doesn't make trees any less wonderful, but they aint clever. The fast living willow that has offspring with a genetically controlled higher dedication to would compartmentalisation are out-competed compared to their brothers and sisters that genetically put all their energy into fast growth.
Killjoy :-(
PS willows and the other fast growers are very good compartmentalisers of basal wounds, but not of branch wounds. Compare with lime which is the opposite.

Technicly the wood doesent burn, no organic matter does. when heat is applied Pyrolysis takes place in the wood giving off a gas this rises and mixes with oxygen and combusts giving flame.
Ive seen reverse flue designs that draw from the bottom sucking the flames back through the wood, very efficient i believe.

Can I ask you in what ways you think it is a shambles? I'm curious as I'm due to start the same course on the 15th of this month.
Thanks
Ben
Have you had any communication with them Ben? information on your bloom page? an invoice so you can pay your fees? because ive had none of the above.

No reply as yet to my email but I have phoned them. No body seemed to know what was going on or could help. I was left with a "Leave it with me". Is anybody doing the course through Myerscough and has received anything?
Im doing the FdSc Aboriculture online course and im in the same situation as you. no communication, no info, no reply to emails (lost count of how many ive sent now)
Im about to jump ship on the whole thing.
-
As per the title really, Im 'doing', if thats what you can call the shambles, the FdSc Arb and im wondering if there is anywhere that offers the same course. this would have to be online distanced learning though.
Thanks

Hi guys,
Just found this post, I am also enrolled on the course and had similar issues as others.
Has anyone received anything yet? Had no course info through at all and find all the passing around between the various sites myerscough/uclan/bloom/office etc a bit confusing as don't know where info is going to come from.
Still waiting hear. Ive jumped through all the hoops and still feel like im not on the course, ive had no specific course info, no communication and still haven't paid anything? According to whats on the bloom page it starts a week today haha.

Deal with it. An fdsc makes you eligible to undertake a role as the person who can deal with it. Deal with it
Well taking into account that i dont have said fdsc yet you point is moot!
-
My experience of it all so far is not encouraging at all.
How complicated do they want to make it.
I had to ask for information on how to enrol as id heard nothing, turns out its all on 'my bloom' page, my what? figured that out only to be referred to Uni of Lanc to fill more **** out and register with them. I've finally enrolled (i think) and waiting yet again for something to happen.
So to date i now have two different logins with different organisations and respective email addresses. And i get the occasional email to my private mail as well. I can see important info getting lost here.

Ive notice this with my 540xp and the 91vxl, it makes it almost unusable!
I think the idea that we should have to mod a chain just to run smooth is ludicrous. Oregon need to sort this out asap.

If its 11Kv then typically the clearance they will want will be 3 to 4 meters.
In reality you will get pretty much what you want in terms of clearance just talk to the permissioner when they come calling.
Really stuck! Please help with advice
