  1. Last year I very reluctantly had to have a large old oak cut down because of Ganoderma rot. There is another even older oak close by which is healthy, but has recently been damaged by a careless lorry driver scraping against a root buttress and stripping some bark off. I'm worried now that fungal spores from the stump of the original oak could transfer and would like some advice on how to prevent this - I was thinking of applying a fungicide but don't know whether this would be appropriate, or what sort. Any ideas gratefully received.
  2. Thanks for your comments everyone. Will follow up some of the suggestions about possible flooding - get the spark plug out and follow the flooded combustion chamber procedure. My main worry was that some damage might have been sustained if petrol rather than 2 stroke had been used by previous owner, whether it starts or not. I realise these things don't just turn on like electrical items, but I never had this problem with an old chainsaw I used to use.
  3. Thanks all for your replies - much appreciated. I'm going to send the chainsaw back because it just won't start. But I've taken a couple of photos of the piston and cylinder. There are some longitudinal marks in the cylinder and I'd be interested in your opinions as to whether there is damage.
  4. I recently bought a little used Stihl MS 250 chainsaw on Ebay. I was surprised to find that the seller despatched it with some fuel left in the tank. More worryingly, it doesn't look like the red 2 stroke mixture I am used to - fairly colourless though possibly a little darker than petrol. I emptied it an replaced it with 2 stroke but cannot get the chainsaw to start - so I am worried now that the engine had been damaged by being used with straight petrol. I've saved the fuel I found in the tank. Does anyone know how to ascertain whether this is indeed petrol or the proper 2 stroke mixture?
