Hi all,

Looking for specialist contractor help. I have a client who owns 4 islands on the Thames, these are to one side of the main channel but still get boat traffic around them. They are covered in Willow and Ash, historically been ignored and now starting to cause problems (particularly with Ash dying and pushing the willow over into the water). Access is a challenge! Worse still because they don't own the adjacent river bank. 

We've just had another tree fall into the channel, which needs removing relatively promptly but also need to plan an operation dealing with the increasing liability. Fell / coppice the trees around the edges that threaten the watercourse. 

I can conceive of an operation based on a barge, ideally with some sort of light weight timber crane to help deal with gathering up material. Its obviously not your average forestry or tree work contractor. Anybody got a suggestion?

What the hell is a level 3 professional tree inspection course? 

My main area of expertise is forest management, but I do occasional roadside and individual tree surveys for properties I manage. I've previously completed The Arboricultural Associations Professional Tree Inspection Course (run by Guy Watson and very good!). I think they are now mostly run by Lantra? 

Over the last few years I've seen a few tenders that specifically require surveyors to hold level 3 qualification or equivalent. You can do Basic (lvl 1?) or Professional (lvl2?)... what is level 3 supposed to be? 

Normally I wouldn't care - I know I'm competent, my clients know I'm competent and the AA PTI proves to insurers that I'm competent. But in this sad modern age - not complying with specific conditions of a tender / contract can cause big problems!

Anybody in the know able to shed some light on this?

Thanks for the replies, very helpful (I must make more use of this forum). Outsourcing the mapping is probably the way to go. I might have another go at producing these sort of maps in mapinfo when I have a spare hour.

Hi all,

I'm looking at getting a basic CAD program for help with BS5837 survey plans and occasional landscape planting plans.

This isn't my main field of work so don't want to spend significant funds on this.

(I probably do 2 or 3 small /simply 5837's a year).

Any suggestions?

Will be looking for a machine like this in the few years. Have several boggy sites coming up. Sites near Hungerford and Henley-on-thames.
